Coffee Builders: A Luxurious Phoenix Coffee Shop by Porter Barnwood

Coffee Builders isn't your average coffee shop. Owned by Thomas Porter of Porter Barnwood, this unique establishment is not only a place to grab a luxurious cup of joe and a delicious bite, but also a stunning showcase of Porter's design and construction talents.

A Design Oasis

Step inside Coffee Builders and be greeted by a visual feast. The former 1960s office space has been transformed into an 850-square-foot haven, completely designed and built by Porter and his team. The space feels expansive despite its footprint, thanks to clever design elements like the tessellated triangular wooden ceiling that wows upon entry.

Solid walnut tables with steel reinforcements and brass lamps line the space, offering a touch of industrial chic. Plush blue leather banquettes and pops of color from the gray and gold barrel chairs add a touch of luxury.

This impressive feat is no surprise considering Porter's lifelong love for woodworking. A Phoenix native, Porter has honed his craft over the years, creating reclaimed wood pieces for renowned restaurants like Pizzeria Bianco and Toca Madera. The Coffee Builders' ceiling itself draws inspiration from his work for Toca.

An Elevated Food and Beverage Experience

But Coffee Builders is more than just aesthetics. Porter's vision extends to the food and beverage program as well. Here, the focus is on offering an elevated experience that goes beyond the usual.

"Luxury food goes beyond A5 Wagyu," says Porter. This philosophy is evident throughout the menu. The Smorrebrod, a Danish open-faced sandwich, features a unique rye bread not found elsewhere in Phoenix. Options include the Avocado Dream with local microgreens, avocado, heirloom tomatoes, havarti, watermelon radish, and chive cream. For a more decadent bite, there are the Champagne Truffled Eggs with a champagne-infused honey mustard and caviar topping. Black truffle burrata and heirloom tomato salad offer lighter fare, in addition to more indulgent offerings of sandwiches, lavash and waffles, all featuring high-quality ingredients.

The coffee menu itself is a collaborative effort between Porter and the baristas, and of course, the coffee is top-notch, roasted locally.

Beyond the Usual Cup

Coffee Builders takes coffee to new heights. Pastries are inspired by an original recipe book from the owners of a former German bakery, Kaffee Kuchen. The beverage menu boasts unique lattes like the Wonderland Truffle Latte, a savory concoction of olive oil, truffles, and dark chocolate. Coffee purists can enjoy the California Cab Latte, made with Camus Winery Cabernet and local organic honey. There's even a blue-hued Matterhorn Bob Sled latte featuring butterfly pea flower, white chocolate, and blueberry, and the Off the Rail pistachio latte, a combination of dark chocolate, espresso, and pistachio. Cold brew lovers can enjoy a cup finished in bourbon barrels for an extra kick.

Coffee Builders is a must-visit for anyone seeking a luxurious and unique coffee experience in Phoenix. From the stunning design to the elevated food and beverage offerings, this establishment is a testament to Thomas Porter's creativity and talent.
